Air Traffic Service

Air Traffic Services (ATS) in the Maldives have a long-standing history, evolving from basic flight control functions to a sophisticated system capable of managing domestic and international air traffic. MNATS has adopted an operational concept that emphasizes safety, efficiency, and the orderly flow of air traffic, whether it involves commercial flights, private aircraft, or military operations.

Core Functions of Air Traffic Services are;

  • Air Traffic Control (ATC): MNATS provides air traffic control at key airports across the Maldives, including Velana International Airport (VIA), which is the main gateway to the country. ATC services are responsible for ensuring that aircraft take off, fly, and land safely, maintaining appropriate separation between aircraft to avoid collisions.
  • Flight Information Services (FIS): This service provides pilots with essential information about flight conditions, weather updates, and other factors that may affect their journey. FIS ensures that pilots are equipped with the latest data for safe flight.
  • Alerting Services: In cases of emergencies, ATS is responsible for notifying the appropriate organizations (e.g., search and rescue, fire services) and coordinating response efforts to manage aircraft incidents.

These services ensure the safe and efficient management of air traffic, supporting both international and domestic aviation.
